What Every Business Broker Needs You to Know

A 3-part series by Melissa Walsh, Business Broker at Zirbes Group

PART 1: This Is More Than a Transaction

Buying or selling a business is often described as “just a transaction.

But if you’ve ever built, run, or led a business, you know that statement misses the heart of the matter entirely. A business isn’t just numbers on a spreadsheet.  I is people, livelihoods, and dreams.

For over 20 years, my career has been dedicated to coaching business owners, professionals, and entrepreneurs.  Guiding them through business development, marketing, operations, leadership, and life-centered strategy. This experience informs every decision I make as a business broker.

Because I know this to be true:

No business changes hands without lives being deeply impacted.

Every sale or acquisition represents:

  • A life transition
  • A career shift
  • Often a legacy moment

Yet so many buyers and sellers focus only on price.

Sellers chase the highest number.
Buyers chase the lowest price.

Price matters, yet it is not the ultimate measure of success.

The most successful transactions are built on clarity and trust. When clarity and trust are present:

  • Deals move faster
  • Negotiations are smoother
  • Due diligence becomes simpler
  • Stress levels drop
  • Outcomes improve for everyone

Without clarity and trust, even promising deals can crumble, sometimes after months of effort.

At Zirbes Group, we approach every transaction differently. Our mission isn’t just to close deals, it’s to guide successful life-changing transitions. We focus on creating transparency, reducing stress, and protecting relationships, so that buyers and sellers walk away confident and inspired about their next chapter.

If you are considering buying or selling a business, remember this: the strongest deals are built on preparation, transparency, and alignment, not just price.

In Part 2, we’ll explore why clarity is especially transformative for business sellers and how it can actually increase the value of your business.
